Did you know that in 2023 a cyber attack occurs every 39 seconds?
A cyber attack is a type of computer crime that aims to access personal data and modify, block, delete, or even steal it. These attacks are complex and can affect multiple computers at the same time. The main motives of hackers are sabotage, espionage, propaganda, or financial gain. How can you avoid such sabotage?
Well, here are three of the most common types of cyber attacks.
"Phishing" attacks
Phishing is an attack in which a hacker poses as a trusted entity and tricks the victim into clicking on a malicious link that can lead to the installation of malware, freezing the system and thereby revealing confidential information.
A common phishing ploy is the mass distribution of e-mails from seemingly trustworthy sources but with fake content. In 2023, nearly 92% of malware was delivered via email. Such a document may state that your password is about to expire and recommend changing it as soon as possible.
Attackers can elaborately spoof the logos of trusted companies, while also using the language characteristic of organizations. Even the access address can be similar to the real one, differing only by a few characters.
If the victim follows the link and enters their data in the fields titled "old password" and "new password", fields typical of a password reset page, it will redirect the data to the attacker monitoring the fake page, giving access to their account.
„Ransomware” attacks
A ransomware attack occurs when a hacker takes control of the victim's computer and encrypts the files on it. Therefore, this data will no longer be accessible to the user.
Cybercriminals demand a certain amount of money to ransom the files. In general, identifying a ransomware attack is possible only after 49 days from its appearance. Frequent or continuous backups can limit the necessary ransom costs or prevent attacks altogether.
Even so, in recent years, ransomware attacks have evolved and can include double extortion by threatening to steal data and publish it online, or even triple extortion by blackmailing the person using the data of the victim's customers or business partners.
Adware and spyware attacks
These forms of attack generally involve installing software applications on users' computers without their knowledge or consent. The goal of hackers is cyber espionage or sending ads for products that generate income to the attackers.
Even though adware may be harmless, some pop-ups don't just show ads, they can collect data and information to customize the ads they show. In these cases, adware can redirect you through these ads to malicious pages and infected pages, putting your computer at risk.
Attacks such as phishing, ransomware, adware, and spyware have an extremely high level of risk. Cyber attacks are common around the world and affect more and more people every day. Therefore, it is very important for a company to be well-informed about the latest developments in security and to adopt the best defensive tactics.
